The Ultimate Guide to Self-Care for Women Who Do Too Much

Self-care. It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot these days. Bubble baths, face masks, shopping, spa days, etc. But – what if I told you there is so much more to self-care than things you can purchase?

Self-care is defined as:

1. “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s health,”

2. “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s well-being and happiness, particularly during periods of stress,” by the Oxford Languages.

Another definition I found from The World Health Organization (WHO) is:

“The ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.” I love this definition as it speaks to how important self-care is for our health. Self-care shouldn’t feel like a luxury – it is an essential need.

When thinking about self-care, it’s essential to be in tune with yourself. What is your soul craving? What is missing in your life? How can you reconnect with yourself in such a busy and stressful time?

Self-care is an action-based practice that nurtures your happiness and enhances your health! Embracing activities that support your emotional, physical, social, and spiritual well-being creates a balanced life where you will thrive.

Being a busy woman myself, I can personally relate to how hard it can be to fit in time for self-care. I am juggling my full-time job, part-time business, my daughter’s soccer schedule, and household responsibilities. Forget about my social life!

It can be overwhelming, to say the least. But I’ve learned that it’s essential to be proactive and schedule time for myself to prevent burnout- because when I am burnt out, I am no good to anyone else and everything feels 1000 times harder.

Take a look at your schedule and carve out time in your calendar to prioritize your needs. For example, I know that the best time to get some body movement in for my day is early in the morning, before I start my day. Is it always easy? Absolutely not – but I never regret it.

If you’re struggling to find time, try waking up 30 minutes earlier or taking a walk during your lunch break. And remember, it’s okay to say no to extra commitments if it means preserving your well-being.

Now that you know why self-care is essential, it’s time to start incorporating it! It can feel like a chore to think of ideas sometimes, so I’ve created a list below to ensure that all aspects are included:

Emotional:

managing stress effectively

going to therapy or asking for help

journaling

practicing self-compassion

having an open and growth mindset

Physical:

getting 7-8 hours of sleep

setting boundaries 

spending time with pets

leaning on a support network

spending time with friends

calling a loved one

stating your needs firmly

taking a break from social media

trying a new hobby 

Spiritual:

spending time alone

connecting with a higher power

having a sacred workspace

going outside to connect with nature

having a gratitude practice (making lists or speaking it out loud)

praying/meditating

self-affirmations

I hope that this brief blog gives you some ideas that you can begin to incorporate into your busy week immediately. Remember, self-care is not one-size-fits-all. Try different things to see what works well, and what doesn’t!

Maybe you’ll find that a morning walk is the perfect way to start your day, or that journaling before bed helps you unwind. The key is to see what resonates with you and makes you feel good.
